Apocalypse Now

ASSIGNMENT S02
Imagine that you are in a dystopian sci-fi world and that the town you live in will not exist this time next week – pretty easy to do when you are in the middle of a global Coronavirus pandemic. If it wasn’t a viral outbreak it could be an invasion from space or a zombie apocalypse and I asked myself what makes this town special, memorable, unique and interesting? I tried to photograph places, people, objects, signs, buildings, urban landscapes and street scenes.
I had seven days to record the essence of where I live in a set of 12 images so that future generations can see what life was like in the 21st century, before disaster struck.
Technique
- This assignment was all about context, which is one of the cornerstones of street photography, so I had to make sure my images contained clear visual clues that convey a strong sense of place.
- I used a small aperture (f/8 or smaller) to increase the depth-of-field and help record this context.
- I tried to shoot ‘less obvious’ subjects, such as inside buildings, the view from a height, or any other location or viewpoint which got across the personality and uniqueness of the area.
Field Notes
- I thought about creating a set of prints for this assignment, maybe seeing if people are interested in purchasing them or if a local café would display them as a mini exhibition.
